Floatables Removal Program - Skimmer Vessel

PVSC’s statutory mission is to protect the environment by “relieving the streams and rivers [within the Passaic Valley River Basin] from pollution....”  In furtherance of that mission, PVSC operates its award-winning River Restoration Program.  Since 1998, PVSC has removed more than 12,000 tons of debris from more than 100 miles of area waterways.  In the last year alone, PVSC removed 500 tons of debris from those waterways.

Skimmer vessel floatables removal is a significant component of this program. In 1999, PVSC purchased a 50-foot surface United Marine International Skimmer Vessel. Christened the S.V. Newark Bay, this vessel embarks on daily patrols on the Newark Bay and Passaic River, removing floating debris and litter. Since 1998 it has removed more than 5,000 tons of debris from the local waterways.

Below are pictures from a recent cleanup.
