WHAT'S BEING DONE ABOUT AIR TOXICS?

...in New Jersey?
In 1979, NJDEP adopted a regulation that specifically addressed air toxics emissions. This rule (Control and Prohibition of Air Pollution by Toxic Substances (Adobe Pdf Format)) listed 11 Toxic Volatile Organic Substances (TVOS) and required that sources emitting those TVOS to the air should register with the Department and demonstrate that they were using state-of-the-art controls to limit their emissions. Since that time, the NJDEP Air Toxics Program has continued to grow to include other approaches that result in the reduction of air toxic emissions.

...by the Federal Government?
USEPA has recently updated its National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) for 1999. NATA provides estimates of what the exposure to more than 100 hazardous air pollutants might have been throughout the country in 1999. You can learn more about the project and the national results at USEPA's NATA web pages.
This is an update of an assessment that USEPA did for 1996. 1996 information can be found at NATA 1996.
