Atlantic white-cedar Restoration Methodology

This page is designed to assist anyone interested in restoring or introducing Atlantic white-cedar in areas that are best suited for growth.
Depending on existing site conditions one or more of the above methods may be omitted. Only major components of an electric fence have been mentioned here. Please contact your NJFS Regional Forester or NJ Approved Consulting Forester for additional components or information.

This page provides information on how to select sites suitable for AWC Restoration, construct a deer exclusion fence when applicable, maintain the fence, and control unwanted vegetative competition. The links below are intended as a guide to erect an electric fence.

These methods include:

Site selection - location, suitable soils and hydrology
In areas that have high densities of deer it is wise to install an electric or other type of exclusion fence. This will reduce the number of deer browsing on regeneration.
Site preparation - Getting the site ready for fence line installation and regeneration.
Flagging the fence line - Layout and/or flagging of a deer exclusion fence (5 strand electric wire fence - solar powered).
Cutting the fence line - Mechanical (mowers) or hand tools (brushsaws, chainsaws and loppers)
Erecting corner posts - Cedar fence posts resistant to rot increases fence longevity.
Stringing the fence line - 5 strand wire fence
Solar panel, battery and charger configuration - Electrical box set-up.
Fence maintenance - Maintain fence for optimal power
Competition control of non Atlantic white-cedar vegetation along fence line and within perimeter. Link coming soon!
Regenerating the site either naturally (existing seed source if present) and /or artificially (planting).
