New Jersey Department of Education

All certification and credentialing fees are waived for the period beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024 thanks to the new state budget and legislation signed by Governor Phil Murphy.

The New Jersey Department of Education supports schools, educators and districts to ensure all of New Jersey's 1.4 million students have equitable access to high quality education and achieve academic excellence. As a national leader in education, New Jersey is committed to ensuring excellence within our schools.

To meet our mission the NJDOE requires committed educators to ensure students achieve postsecondary success. This webpage provides information on how to obtain New Jersey certification for teachers, school leaders, educational services personnel, career and technical educators and substitutes.

Basic Skills Requirement Update/Alternative Certificate of Eligibility

The New Jersey Department of Education will work as expeditiously as possible with the State Board of Education to implement the requirements set forth in P.L. 2023, c. 180. A teacher candidate who meets all other eligibility requirements to receive an alternative certificate of eligibility, except for the requirement to achieve a minimum score on a Commissioner of Education-approved test of basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills, may be issued a certificate. As such, school districts will be permitted to hire individuals when additional procedures are put in place. We look forward to sharing additional information when available.
