Launched in June 2024, the Parent Council is comprised of primary caregivers who have been involved with or are currently involved with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P). Council members work collaboratively with DCF leadership to improve DCP&P and implement systemic changes that benefit families.

Council members set priorities and recommendations to improve the Department. They also have opportunities to advocate through public speaking, reviewing initiatives and proposals, and developing resources for the Department and stakeholders. Shortly after launch, the DCF Parent Council established its mission:

Mission Statement
The DCF Parent Council aims to collaborate with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) by creating systemic change that will enhance individual well-being and community healing, improve community perception, and promote a supportive and protective relationship between communities and DCF.

Application Process

The DCF Parent Council accepts applications year round. When the council is at capacity, applicants will be placed on a waitlist and interviewed as spaces become available. Waitlist members will receive emails with status updates as well as resources such as employment opportunities. To apply you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Over 18 years old.
  • Have been a caregiver when the DCP&P case was open. If you were caring for children when DCP&P investigated and opened a case, you are likely eligible.
  • Have a current or past (within the last 5 years) DCP&P case.

DCF Parent Council meetings are held virtually every 2nd and 4th Tuesday (5:30PM-7PM). Council members meet in-person at least twice a year at the Office of Training and Development in New Brunswick, NJ
