“Hike to the Huts.” It’s exercise and education all in one trip as you join a park guide on a hike from the Visitor Center to the Soldiers Huts and back again along the Yellow Trail. Learn about such varied topics as the winter encampment, an 1890’s aqueduct system, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the development of Morristown National Historical Park. The hike is approximately 2 ¼ miles long and should last about 2 ½ hours. Meet at 12pm at the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center.

Muckshaw Ponds Preserve, Newton.

Join staff of the Nature Conservancy celebrate National Trails Day by clearing and blazing a new trail section and spring clearing the existing trail at the Muckshaw Ponds Preserve. Highlands Critical Treasures Hike. The Highlands Coalition, Skylands CLEAN, and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference join forces to offer a National Trails Day hike through a critical treasure of the New Jersey Highlands. The “treasure” is 425 acres adjoining Norvin Green State Forest. The hike will follow various trails to the new Will Monroe Loop, which travels along the summit of Assiniwikam Mountain providing scenic views, including most of the acreage threatened by development. The 5+ mile hike is rated class B and will be at a moderate pace. Meet at the Weis Ecology Center at 9:30am. Park in the outer lot, then meet at the Weis Bldg. There will be a brief presentation by the H-C and NYNJTC. Bring lunch or a snack and water. Hiking boots a must. Return route depends on the group. Adopt-a-Trail Program. Come and learn about the various trails here at the ‘Crossing which include hiking, cycling, horseback riding and the historic Continental Lane Trail. Volunteers can then sign up to Adopt-a-Trail where they can become trail stewards for one year to help park staff with litter pick-up, erosion control and help inform the public of trail rules. Trail Keeper Award and National Trails Day Hike. Join the South Mountain Conservancy and the Essex County Park System for a brief ceremony in which Essex County Parks Director Daniel Salvante will present the annual Trail Keeper Award to Dennis Percher. Following refreshments, join Jay Krafchick on a 2-hour hike along the Rahway Trail. This is a moderate to brisk hike of about 4 miles on slightly rocky terrain that follows the Rahway River and passes several ponds. Meet at Locust Grove Picnic Area at South Mountain Reservation at 10am. The picnic area is off of Glen Avenue in Millburn, NJ.

Take Route 173 toward Bloomsbury (up the hill) from exit 11. At the top of the hill, turn right onto Mine Rd. at the Bethlehem Twp. Municipal Bldg. The park is across the street. Shark River Park: GSP to exit 100 (Hwy 33 East). Continue on Hwy 33 to Schoolhouse Rd. Turn right on Schoolhouse Rd. and follow to main park entrance on right. Celebrate National Trails Day with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. Join us for self-guided walks throughout the day around the Marsh Discovery Trail, a floating boardwalk. Sample for aquatic critters at the outdoor classroom. Assist with a park clean-up, visit the “Interactive Learning Center,” a museum for all ages. Visit exhibitors, enjoy a craft, relax and have some free refreshments. Free t-shirts while they last! From the NJ Turnpike take Route 3 West to Route 17 South (Lyndhurst Exit). Follow the ramp over Route 3 to the traffic light. Make a left onto PolitoAve. and follow to the stop sign at the end. Make a left onto Valley Brook Ave. and continue approx. 1 ½ miles to the railroad tracks. Keep left beyond the RR tracks and enter Richard W. DeKorte Park. Somerset County Park Commission and Eastern Mountain Sports are looking for volunteers for a trail workday that will include clearing brush and building boardwalks. Wear old clothes and old shoes or work boots. Bring gloves and your favorite hammer. Food and beverages will be provided. Rain date: Sunday, June 6. In Hillsborough, from Route 206, take Amwell Rd. west (CR 514) to the 4th light, make a left onto East Mountain Rd., the Sourland Mountain Preserve entrance will be about 1.5 miles on the right.

Directions: I-95 in New Jersey to exit 3 (Scotch Rd. North). Proceed to third traffic light and make left onto Route 546W. Proceed through the next traffic light at the Route 579 intersection. Main entrance to the park will be 0.6 miles beyond the light on the right-hand side of Route 546. Enter park ($5.00 per car fee) and follow signs to the Interpretive Center.
