Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) | NJ Department of Human Services
You may be able to request replacement benefits for food lost due to the impact of a disaster and utilize a waiver to purchase hot food. For more information, visit NJ SNAP.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance | NJ Department of Labor
Disaster Unemployment Assistance provides temporary benefits to individuals whose income from employment or self-employment has been lost or interrupted as a direct result of a major disaster and who are not eligible for regular Unemployment Insurance.

Utilities Programs

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The Home Energy Assistance Program helps very low-income residents with their heating and cooling bills, and makes provisions for emergency heating system services and emergency fuel assistance within the Home Energy Assistance Program.

How to Apply for LIHEAP:

1. Find out if you are eligible
     Review the Energy Assistance Program Fact Sheet and Income Guidelines

2. If you are eligible, fill out an application
     Download, print and complete the Home Energy/USF/Weatherization Program Application [pdf  389kB]

3. Submit a completed application to your Local Community Action Agency
     Choose from the list of Local Application Agency's contact information

Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP)

LIHWAP provides financial assistance to low-income households to reduce the balances they owe on residential water and wastewater bills.

How to apply for LIHWAP:

Visit the DCAid Service Portal and click the blue button that says “New LIHWAP Application”.

Internet & Digital Connectivity

The Lifeline program and the Affordable Connectivity Program help make phone and internet service more affordable or free for low-income individuals. Eligible individuals also qualify for a free smartphone through the Lifeline program. If you participate in certain assistance programs like Medicaid, NJ SNAP or SSI, you automatically qualify for both federal programs.

Disaster Legal Services | Federal Emergency Management Agency

Disaster Legal Services (DLS) provides free legal help to low-income disaster survivors. If you're not able to get adequate legal services for your disaster-related needs, DLS may be able to help. The types of legal assistance offered may include help with insurance, lost documents, contractor or landlord disputes, legal documents, FEMA appeals, and more. Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties | Northeast New Jersey Legal Services

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) provides legal representation and advice to income-eligible individuals and families in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties. NNJLS also offers community education and partnerships. Legal assistance for disaster survivors includes help with the following civil legal issues: unsafe or unlivable housing; lost, damaged, or destroyed government documents; FEMA and disaster insurance claims; foreclosure prevention; difficulty with contractors or repairs; and more.
