After two successful walks last year, DRBC staff were excited to again team up this fall to co-host another Trenton Walks! with the Trenton Green Team's Becky Taylor and Tim Brill.

For this walk, we started things at DRBC's office in West Trenton, N.J. After introductions, folks had the opportunity to check out the DRBC's water quality labs and learn a little bit about our monitoring programs from DRBC Water Quality Intern Sonia Nicholson. Nicholson discussed our monitoring efforts for cyanotoxins and nutrients, showing folks the e-DNA machine used to filter samples to identify toxic algae and a sonde used to collect real-time instream nutrient data.

Afterward, folks carpooled to the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath to walk the Scudder Falls Shared Use Path over the Delaware River to PA and back. This ~2 mile walk featured amazing views of the Delaware River and sparked some great conversation about protecting our shared water resources.

Attendees were from Trenton and the surrounding Mercer County area and were interested in learning about local water resource topics, the river's water quality and generally about the DRBC. DRBC staff were happy to share stories and talk about how the Delaware River at Trenton is an important monitoring point for water quality and flow management and the role the canal plays in water supply.

The Trenton Green Team is composed of a group of engaged Trenton residents and people committed to fostering a healthy, sustainable community. City staff, Trenton residents and Trenton area non-profits work together to engage community members and to foster sustainability initiatives.

The Trenton Walks! program was initiated in June 2024 and features group walks throughout Trenton, highlighting the city's history, recreational opportunities and communities. As a Trenton Green Team Member, DRBC staff has participated in four Trenton Walks! outings and enjoyed the opportunity to engage with community members and share information about the DRBC, our programs and our commitment to Trenton as our "home" community.
