Authorized to Teach

The Cosmetology/Hairstyling #4138 endorsement entitles the holder to teach in New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE)-approved career and technical education (CTE) courses in the following programs, and programs of study under the following Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes.

Employment experience requirements can be met using one of the following:

  • Full-time or part-time employment, or both (not self-employment)
  • Self-employment
  • Military qualifications and training

  • Cosmetology chemistry lab and practicum
  • Extension and wigs
  • Hair color
  • Hair cutting
  • Hair styling
  • Men's grooming
  • Nail care
  • Permanent waving
  • Scalp conditioning
  • Shop management
  • Skincare basics
  • New Jersey state laws for cosmetology and hairstyling
  • Tinting
  • Thermal waving

Candidates must submit a copy of their current cosmetology-hairstylist license issued by the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

A “shop license” issued by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling does not require the holder of the shop license to be a licensed cosmetologist; therefore, a shop license will not be accepted as a substitute for either a cosmetology-hairstylist license.

Employment experience is only required if the candidate is obtaining certification using one of the following:

Candidates using option 1 without the GPA exception are not required to have employment experience.
