School Library Media Specialist and Associate School Library Media Specialist Residency Agreement

NJDOE Requirements

The New Jersey Department of Education agrees to meet the following requirements as set forth in N.J.A.C. 6A:9B-14.14:

  1. Process the registration submitted by the district in the NJEdCert certification system and issue a provisional license to the School Library Media Specialist (SLMS)/Associate School Library Media Specialist (ASLMS) valid for a period of up to two years;
  2. Provide the district with the requirements for the operation of a residency;
  3. Issue a standard SLMS/ASLMS certificate based upon the completion of the residency program and the recommendation of the district including an approved program of study if applicable.

District Requirements

The School District agrees to meet the following requirements as set forth in N.J.A.C. 6A:9B-14.14:

  1. Register the SLMS/ASLMS in NJEdCert certification system and indicate program of study for holders of the Certificate of Eligibility;
  2. Provide a residency program of ten months or proportionally longer if part-time;
  3. Provide appropriate mentoring to the candidate by an experienced school library media specialist or alternatively, contact the New Jersey Association of School Librarians on behalf of the candidate for assignment of a mentor;
  4. Arrange a residency for the SLMS/ASLMS to work under the regular supervision of a supervisor who holds standard New Jersey supervisor, principal, or school administrator certification. The supervisor will observe and supervise the work of the candidate and ensure the candidate receives appropriate training, support, mentoring, practicum experiences, professional opportunities in each of the following areas during their residency:
    1. Development and coordination of school library media programs and resources;
    2. Delivery of instruction in information literacy skills;
    3. Delivery of instruction in the evaluation, selection, organization, distribution, creation, and utilization of school library media.
  5. The supervisor shall complete the final summative rating for the SLMS/ASLMS upon conclusion of the residency;
  6. Enter the final summative rating in the NJEdCert certification system;
  7. Submit for the conversion to standard in NJEdCert upon completion of all residency requirements.
