Educational Interpreter: Sign Language Interpreting Standard Certificate

The educational interpreter endorsement is required for individuals who provide educational interpreting services, sign language interpreting or cued speech transliteration to students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf-blind in preschool through grade 12. To be eligible for the Educational Interpreter — Sign Language Standard certificate, you will need to complete the following:
Degree Requirement
Hold an associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
Assessment Requirement
- Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
- Pass the EIPA Written Test and Knowledge Standards.
Other Requirements
Complete one of the following:
Option 1
Twelve semester-hour credits of professional education coursework that includes study in child development, language development, curriculum development, methods of instruction, interpreting for deaf-blind students, and legal and ethical issues for educational interpreters. Such study may be part of, or in addition to, the degree program and may be completed at an accredited two-year college.
Note
The amount of semester-hour credits needed to meet the required areas of study may exceed that of the required 12 semester-hour credit minimum. You may have to complete more than 12 semester-hour credits to meet all required areas of study.
Option 2
Hold a certificate of educational interpreting from an accredited two- or four-year college.
To be eligible for the Educational Interpreter – Cued Speech Transliteration Emergency certificate, you must complete the following:

Hold an associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
Assessment Requirement
Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
Note
The emergency certificate may be renewed a total of three times.
