The Taxpayers’ Guide to Education Spending (TGES) is an annual publication that provides comparative financial information on educational spending for districts and charter schools. All data used to calculate the figures reported in the TGES are based on district-reported data. Taxpayers can use information provided in the TGES as a starting point for discussions with their local district or charter schools about needs, priorities and use of resources.
The TGES provides:
- Total expenditures for each district on students enrolled in the public school system.
- Instructional or administrative costs per pupil, salary and benefit cost, and staffing data (average salary and student-teacher ratios).
- The annual publications each provide up to three years of data to allow comparison across the two or three most recent years.
For most of the indicators, the districts are categorized by operating type (e.g., elementary only, K-12, county vocational, etc.) and enrollment to allow a comparison between similar districts.
