Computer Science
In support of the New Jersey Computer Science State Plan, the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Computer Science (NJSLS-CS) were adopted by the State Board of Education on June 3, 2020. The Office of Innovation is leading the effort to support New Jersey educators in realizing the vision of the Computer Science State Plan to provide equitable and expanded access to high-quality, standards-based Computer Science education for all K–12 students.
Computer science often includes computer programming or coding as a tool to create software, including applications, games, websites, and tools to manage or manipulate data; or the development and management of computer hardware and the other electronics related to sharing, securing, and using digital information.
In addition to coding, the expanding field of computer science emphasizes computational thinking and interdisciplinary problem-solving to equip students with the skills and abilities necessary to apply computation in our digital world.
Since 2021, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has supported three regional Computer Science (CS) Hubs through a competitive grant opportunity to expand equitable access to high-quality computer science education. The NJDOE is proud to continue supporting the CS Hubs initiative into its fifth year.
From June 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026, the CS Hubs will offer New Jersey public school K–12 teachers and administrators free professional development, technical assistance, classroom resources, and networking opportunities to support implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Computer Science (NJSLS-CS).
Each CS Hub provides flexible, standards-aligned professional learning opportunities—including in-person, virtual, and blended formats—focused on both computer science content and inclusive instructional practices across all grade bands. Educators can also access the Hub’s lending library, which offers classroom-ready kits such as microcontrollers, robots, drones, and other physical computing devices that can be borrowed for hands-on use in schools. New Jersey public schools are encouraged to connect with their regional CS Hub for guidance and to visit their Hub’s website below to register for upcoming events.
