How the staffing ratios are calculated using Registered Nurse (RN) staffing as an example

  1. RN-to-Resident staffing ratio for any Shift in a day =

(Number of patients in the facility during the shift)    (Number of hours in the Shift)
(Total hours worked by RNs in the shift)

  2. RN-to-Resident staffing ratio for a shift in a Quarter =

(Total of patients in the facility for the shift over the Quarter)    (Number of hours in the Shift)
(Total hours worked by RNs in the Quarter in that shift)

Note: Number of hours in a shift could be 8 hours or 12 hours depending on whether the facility has three eight hour shifts or two 12 hour shifts.
