Plan to Reduce Chronic Disease and Promote Health to Be Announced Tuesday

 Panel Discussion on Model Prevention Initiatives at Cooper University Hospital

Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd will announce the state's new five-year plan to reduce chronic disease at Cooper University Hospital on Tuesday, January 28.

The announcement will be followed by a panel discussion with Kim Fortunato, director of childhood obesity and hunger programs at Campbell Soup, Inc.; Bill Lovett, executive director of the YMCA State Alliance; and Diane Litterer, executive director of the New Jersey Prevention Network.

Officials representing hospitals, business, nonprofit agencies, academia and government are expected to attend the event, which begins at 10 am in the Roberts Pavilion Conference Center.

The chronic disease plan, called Partnering for a Healthy New Jersey: New Jersey Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Plan outlines evidence-based prevention programs and environmental strategies to promote prevention and wellness programs and support healthy lifestyles for a growing population.

The plan outlines seven winnable battles:

 

  • Improve environmental health
  • Promote self-management
  • Increase early detection
  • Improve access to quality health care
  • Eliminate tobacco use
  • Improve nutrition
  • Increase physical activity
