New Jersey Department of Health Supports Newark's Activities Related to Lead in Drinking Water
The New Jersey Department of Health supports the city of Newark's activities related to recent test results showing elevated lead levels in several city homes.
The Department of Health's guidance for homes with lead service lines aligns with the city of Newark's. We recommend bottled water for pregnant women, children under the age of six and for use in mixing powdered baby formula,.
"Pregnant women, infants and children under the age of six are especially at risk for adverse health impacts due to lead exposure. Lead can have long-term effects on the developing brains of children," said Acting Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli.
The Department also recommends that pregnant women and children less than six years of age be tested for lead. State law requires children to be tested for lead at ages one and two.
