October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NJDOH is raising awareness of the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program (NJCEED), which offers screening services for breast and other cancers for low-income uninsured or underinsured residents.

Launched in October 1978 in response to New Jersey having the highest cancer mortality rate in the nation, the New Jersey State Cancer Registry within the NJDOH collects cancer surveillance data on all cancer cases in the state.

Overview
To recognize the exemplary work being done to improve health outcomes in New Jersey, the DOH has created the Public Health Innovators Awards. This month,in conjuction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are highlighting innovative research being conducted to address breast cancer in the state.
Women's Circle of Health Study
The Women’s Circle of Health study is a collaboration of several institutions, including the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, NJDOH, Rutgers School of Public Health, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
The study aims to evaluate factors explaining the earlier age at diagnosis and the more aggressive nature of breast cancer in African-American women, compared to Caucasian women.
EXCELS
Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School's Extended Cancer Education for Long-term Survivors in Primary Care (EXCELS) study aims to determine whether certain types of educational materials and communications are better suited to help people make health and medical decisions after they have completed initial cancer treatment.
Hoboken Family Planning
As a lead NJCEED agency, Hoboken Family Planning (HFP) has consistently met and exceeded targets for screening women for breast and cervical cancer. In SFY2018, HFP served 773 new women in Hudson County, working collaboratively with Metropolitan Health Center, a Jersey City based federally qualified health center. HFP also served 491 new women in Union County.
