Proven safety advantage – Studies show that riders with certified training have far fewer accidents. In fact, 90% of motorcycle accidents involve untrained riders. And when accidents do occur, trained riders suffer fewer injuries.

Road test waiver – Upon successful completion of the BRC or BRC2, you may be eligible for a road test waiver.*

Insurance discounts – Most insurance carriers offer a discount to motorcyclists who complete a certified training/defensive driving course every 2-3 years. Contact your insurance carrier for details.

Law Change: Effective January 1, 2013, anyone who takes a road test at MVC on a bike that is 231CC or less is restricted to riding only a 500CC or less motorcycle (M endorsement or Class E motorcycle-only license with restriction). If the road test is taken on a bike that is over 231CC, there will be no restriction with the M endorsement or motorcycle-only license. Anyone who successfully completes a Motorcycle Safety Education Program (MSEP) course is exempt from this bike size requirement and will not be restricted. Riders who are restricted to a bike that is 500CC or less will have a restriction “5” noted on their license and will be required to carry an MVC-issued restriction card while operating the motorcycle.

Beginner training class layout
Level 1

Basic Rider Course (BRC)

The BRC is designed for beginning riders. It is a also a great refresher course for returning riders who have not ridden for a while. Approximately five hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of riding exercises in a controlled environment provide a complete introduction to motorcycling. The course is conducted over two or three sessions. Motorcycles and helmets are provided for your use during the course. All level of students are welcome.

To participate in the BRC you must:

  • Be able to balance and ride a bicycle
  • Wear proper riding gear (see below)
Graduates of this course may be eligible for:
  • Waiver of the state knowledge and road/skills test to add a motorcycle endorsement to their driver license*
  • Insurance premium discounts offered by some providers
Advanced street strategy class
Level 2

Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2)

Advanced riders can continue learning and sharpening their riding skills in the BRC2 - Skills Plus, Skills Practice and BRC2-License Waiver. NJ providers offer a variety one-day courses for experienced riders, usually lasting from 4-6 hours. Participants use their own motorcycles and gear.

To participate in the BRC2 you must:

  • Have a valid motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement
  • Have a valid registration and insurance card for your vehicle
  • Wear proper riding gear (see below)

Graduates of this course may be eligible for:

  • Insurance premium discounts
  • Two-point reduction on your driving record and/or credit for completion of a “defensive driving” program*  (BRC2 Plus ONLY)

Proper riding gear:

  • Federal DOT approved helmet (helmets will be provided for BRC courses). For information on DOT-compliant helmets, visit NHTSA.gov
  • Eye protection
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long pants (torn or ripped clothing not permitted)
  • Full-fingered gloves without holes
  • Shoes that cover the ankle without heels
  • Rain gear (if necessary)

Can I take one of these courses if I’ve never ridden a motorcycle?
Yes. Previous motorcycle riding experience is not required to enroll in the Basic Rider Course (BRC). The only requirement is that you must be physically able to balance and ride a bicycle.
What specific riding gear must I bring to the class?
You must bring a DOT-approved helmet, protective long-sleeve shirts or jackets, full long pants without cuts, gloves covering fingers, and over-the-ankle solid boots.
Do I need to get a learner’s permit before taking the course?

What kind of motorcycles are the courses taught on?
This varies by training provider. Generally speaking, training bikes range from 125cc to 499cc. According to MSF regulations, it is not permissible to conduct training on bikes larger than 499cc.
Is it expensive?
The cost of training varies from course to course, and from provider to provider. But overall it’s very affordable and probably much less than you think!
