Route 4 eastbound overnight closure announced
this weekend in Englewood
Detours will be in place for bridge deck replacement

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 4 eastbound will be completely closed to traffic and detoured this weekend during the overnight hours while the replacement of the Route 4 bridge deck over Flat Rock Brook in Englewood City, Bergen County advances. The $1.5 million state-funded project will replace the existing, deteriorated structure with a new pre-cast concrete bridge deck.

The eastbound lanes of Route 4 east of Grand Avenue will be completely closed beginning at 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 2, through 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, and at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, through 9:00 a.m. Sunday, August 4, with the contractor, Creamer-Sanzari Inc., installing a new prefabricated structure bridge deck.

  • Traffic on Route 4 will be detoured using Teaneck Road southbound to Degraw Avenue/Fort Lee Road eastbound to I-95 northbound to the Fletcher Avenue exit (Exit 72).
  • Local traffic will be detoured using Grand Avenue southbound to Fort Lee Road/Degraw Avenue westbound to the Frank W. Burr jughandle to get on Degraw Avenue eastbound to I-95 northbound to the Fletcher Avenue exit (Exit 72).
  • Traffic coming from Route 17 or Route 4 and 208 east of Paramus heading for the George Washington Bridge will be directed to Route 17 southbound to I-80 eastbound and then I-95 northbound straight to the George Washington Bridge.

The construction on Route 4 is near the George Washington Bridge in Bergen County. Motorists are encouraged to leave extra time for travel or plan alternate routes.

The new bridge deck will be manufactured off site and installed by the contractor over two separate weekends. Route 4 westbound is scheduled to be fully closed to traffic and detoured the following weekend for the bridge deck installation. The use of pre-cast concrete bridge components will enable NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic.

In addition to the replacement of the existing bridge deck, NJDOT will resurface the bridge approaches on Route 4 in both directions. Construction is scheduled for completion later this summer.

NJDOT will employ variable message signs to notify motorists of the upcoming bridge closure. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
