Construction To Resume
On Route 35 After Labor Day
Motorists Should Be Alert Fo
Multiple Work Zones Throughout The Project
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced construction to rebuild Route 35 will resume on Tuesday, September 2. The Department suspended its construction on Route 35 during the busy summer season to minimize the inconvenience to businesses, residents, and vacationers who make the Jersey Shore a prime tourist destination between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Route 35, which is the backbone of the Barnegat Peninsula, was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The project began last summer and substantial progress has been made, including the complete reconstruction of the interchange between Route 37 and Route 35 that serves as a primary way on and off the peninsula.
NJDOT and its contractors have been working with local officials, businesses, and residents throughout the project to minimize the impact of construction on the community and will continue to do so.
The project is divided into three geographic sections, with multiple work zones in each section. The following work is scheduled to start next week for each section:
Mileposts 0-4 in Berkeley, Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, and Toms River
In this section, Route 35 is generally a divided highway, providing two travel lanes in each direction from the entrance of Island Beach State Park, extending through Berkeley, Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, and Toms River. This section includes the interchange with Route 37, which has been reconstructed and opened before the summer.
- To ensure the smooth flow of traffic and reduce possible congestion during the weekend of September 6 and 7 when there are several large events scheduled in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park, NJDOT’s contractor, Union Paving & Construction Co., has been very cooperative in working with the community to restrict its work and keep the normal complement of travel lanes open. However, work in the median between L Street and 4th Street will limit parking in the area.
- Between 5th Street and N Street Route 35 is divided with median parking between the northbound and southbound lanes. The left lane in both directions and the median will be closed for the installation of drainage. A single lane and shoulder in both directions will remain open.
- The normal complement of two lanes in each direction will be reopened for the weekend of September 6 and 7. During that weekend, median parking will be limited.
- Upon completion of the median work, both northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the northbound roadway to allow the complete reconstruction of the southbound lanes.
- Between Dewey Avenue and 6th Street northbound traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed left side of the northbound roadway to allow for the reconstruction of the right lane and shoulder in the northbound direction. One lane and a shoulder will be maintained. However, both lanes will be reopened and available for the weekend of September 6 and 7.
- Work on the side streets will continue
Mileposts 4-9 in Lavallette, Toms River, and Brick
In this section, Route 35 is generally a divided highway, providing two travel lanes in each direction.
- One travel lane will be closed in both the northbound and southbound directions for utility relocation, drainage improvements and paving between Ortley Avenue in Lavallette to Curtis Point Drive at the border of Brick and Mantoloking. One lane and a narrow shoulder in each direction will be maintained. Motorists should drive slowly through the work zone and be alert for traffic shifts
- NJDOT’s contractor, George Harms Construction Co., has worked with local officials and businesses to limit construction in the Lavallette Business District until later in the fall as best as possible.
- Work on the side streets will continue
Mileposts 9-12.5 in Mantoloking and Bay Head
In this section, Route 35 consists of a single roadway offering just one travel lane in each direction with shoulders. Much of this section has been reconstructed and is complete beginning at Osborne Avenue in Bay Head and heading south.
- In Bay Head, Route 35 southbound traffic will be detoured onto East Avenue from Osborne Avenue to Johnson Street. Route 35 northbound will be shifted onto the newly constructed southbound lane at Johnson Street through Osborne Avenue.
- In a separate work zone, the northbound lane will be closed for approximately a half-mile between Herbert Street and Lyman Street, with alternating traffic for the installation of drainage, sanitary sewer, watermains and ITS conduit followed by reconstruction of the road and paving. There will be no parking on Route 35 in the construction zone. Work in this section will take place 24 hours a day from 11 p.m. Sundays through 11 p.m. Fridays.
- In Mantoloking between Downer Avenue (milepost 9.7) and Curtis Point Drive (milepost 9.0) northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted onto the newly paved Route 35 southbound lane and the southbound shoulder. NJDOT’s contractor, Agate Construction Co., will be doing drainage and sewer installation in the northbound lanes.
- Work on the side streets will continue
Project Details
In each section of the project, Route 35 will be completely rebuilt. The new stone-and-asphalt roadway will be two feet thick, providing a more stable road and smoother driving surface. A new storm-water drainage system for Route 35 has been designed to handle 25-year storms and will feature nine pump stations and treatment facilities to filter and purify the storm water prior to discharge into Barnegat Bay.
NJDOT has an accelerated schedule for this project to accomplish a massive amount of work in as short a timeframe as possible to bring the shore back better than ever.
