Living Shorelines Projects
NFWF Building Ecological Solutions To Coastal Community Hazards
New Jersey has many ecologically significant coastal areas threatened by dense coastal development and climate change impacts. Ecosystem-based green infrastructure strategies protect critical habitat, people, and infrastructure in a cost-effective manner.
The goal of the NFWF grant is to systemically identify successful strategies, develop them into clear, ready-to-use local actions, assess large numbers of communities for the applicability of these strategies, and work with a number of pilot communities to create quick wins and success models that will drive further adoption throughout the State. The use of man-made structures, or grey infrastructure such as seawalls, levees, and revetments, has been common practice for communities seeking protection from coastal hazards, storm surges, and the resulting coastal flooding. Alternately, enhancing, restoring, and significantly increasing the use of ecosystem-based green infrastructure can foster community resiliency to multiple climate impacts. Green infrastructure typically costs less than structural measures and includes landscape features like coastal wetlands, living shorelines, open space and parks, and tree canopies and provides many valuable co-benefits, including air quality improvements, carbon mitigation, clean water, fish and wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and economic development activities like fishing, boating, and tourism.
The project team includes the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Sustainable Jersey, National Wildlife Federation, the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Barnegat Bay Partnership, the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, Stevens, Rutgers, NJ Audubon and nine pilot communities: Atlantic City, Brigantine, Downe, Lower, Margate, Secaucus, Somers Point, Spring Lake, and Upper and one county: Cape May County.
