District Equity Story

Strategic Planning for Equity

Emerson School District’s [MP2.1]progress was grounded in a five-year strategic plan that prioritized diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through analysis of subgroup data, Emerson School District identified disparities and intentionally focused on expanding access to AP coursework by removing barriers rather than limiting participation based on traditional performance measures.

Structural Changes to Increase Access

Emerson School District eliminated traditional tracking practices and provided[MP3.1] rigorous grade-level instruction with tiered supports beginning in the elementary grades. At the secondary level, reduced tracking and flexible waiver policies allowed more students to access AP courses, including those who did not meet traditional placement criteria but demonstrated motivation and readiness.

Expanding Course Opportunities

Emerson School District expanded its AP course offerings, including the addition of AP Chemistry and AP Economics, and provided opportunities for independent study AP courses. Courses without strict prerequisites served as entry points into advanced coursework.

Student Monitoring and Support Structures

Quarterly assessments were used to monitor student progress and provide targeted support. Financial assistance was provided to students eligible for free or reduced lunch to ensure equitable access to AP exams and coursework.

Collaborative Leadership

Emerson School District leaders, including administrators and the Director of Curriculum, collaborated to develop and implement a shared vision focused on expanding access and supporting student success in AP programs.
