District Equity Story

Student Voice in Policy Creation and Implementation

Student agency was central to Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology (PCSST)’s dual enrollment program since its inception. Through surveys and academic planning discussions, students shared their interests, career goals, and course preferences. This input directly shaped program offerings and pathways, ensuring alignment between student aspirations and available opportunities. By empowering students to take ownership of their academic trajectory, PCSST fostered a culture of belonging and ambition, particularly for first-generation college-bound learners..

Inclusive Faculty/Staff Leadership

Counselors, teachers, and administrators collaborated to guide the program. Counselors played a leadership role in advising students, monitoring progress, and ensuring readiness. Staff engaged in ongoing professional development and aligned instruction with college expectations. This coordinated approach ensured that all students received the academic preparation and support necessary for success in rigorous coursework.

Collaboration with Families

Families were active partners in the dual enrollment process. PCSST maintained consistent communication and encouraged family engagement in planning and decision-making. Families supported students’ persistence and academic goals, reinforcing the value of early college experiences. This partnership strengthened trust and ensured that students from underrepresented backgrounds felt supported throughout their journey.

Structural Changes for Equity

PCSST implemented several transformative strategies:

  • Elimination of financial barriers by covering tuition, fees, and materials
  • Expansion of course pathways across grades 9–12
  • Flexible delivery models (on-campus, online, hybrid)
  • Access to nine college and university partners

These structural changes removed barriers related to cost, scheduling, and access, significantly broadening participation.

Utilization of Quantitative Data

PCSST used a comprehensive data-driven approach. Counselors analyzed PSAT, NJSLA, AP results, and teacher recommendations to determine readiness. Student surveys guided course alignment with career goals. Longitudinal data tracking enrollment, credit attainment, and subgroup performance ensured continuous improvement and equitable outcomes.
