The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) may impose civil monetary penalties (CMP) against nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities if they are not in substantial compliance with CMS requirements for Long Term Care Facilities.

The funds collected through CMP may be used to support activities that protect or improve the quality of care or quality of life for residents. Certified nursing homes, academic or research institutions, state, local or tribal governments, and various other types of organizations may apply to obtain CMP funds for these purposes.
