Aggressive Driver Quiz - Are you an aggressive driver? (pdf) As you answer 38 "Yes or No" questions, this online quiz will help you become more aware of your own driving behaviors and aggressive driving tendencies.
Keep Your Distance Palm Card - Addressing the safety risks and consequences of tailgating, this two-sided palm card focuses on new laser technology that aids law enforcement in identifying tailgaters.

Aggressive driving is an epidemic on our nation's roads. Tension among motorists is particularly high in New Jersey, which is the most densely populated state in the country. Characteristics of an aggressive driver include speeding, excessive lane changing, tailgating, and gesturing at other drivers. The Division of Highway Traffic Safety is committed through its educational and enforcement programs to reduce the threat that aggressive drivers pose.

Excessive speed is the most common aggressive driving habit associated with traffic crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that one-third of all crashes and two-thirds of all fatal crashes are speed-related. In 2008, there were 22,118 crashes related to unsafe speed in New Jersey. Speeding reduces a driver's ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, and extends the distance needed to safely stop a vehicle.

To help motorists become more aware of their own aggressive driving behaviors, an online quiz is available. Questions include: Do you maintain appropriate distance when following other vehicles, bicyclists, motorcyclists; provide appropriate distance when cutting in after passing vehicles; yield to pedestrians; maintain speeds appropriate for conditions; yield and/or move to the right for emergency vehicles; avoid challenging other drivers; and, refrain from flashing your headlights to signal a desire to pass.

It is clear that the job of reducing aggressive driving in New Jersey rests with all of us. All roadway users need to show courtesy to one another. Helpful tips include staying focused on your driving at all times and budgeting yourself some extra time when you set out in order to avoid rushing and stress. By all means, if another motorist does something that upsets you, do not escalate the situation! Let it go! You will be much better off, and safer.
