Schedule

The traffic staging and work schedule is based on the most recent information provided by the contractor.

Through June 2008 - completed
Work:
  • Construction of temporary North intersection
  • Preparation work for removal of south half of existing bridge
Traffic:
  • No change to existing traffic patterns
   
June 2008 - Labor Day 2008 - completed
Work:
  • Removal of portion of the superstructure of the existing bridge
  • Start of foundation work for new southbound bridge
  • Start of pedestrian bridge piers for north pedestrian bridge
Traffic:
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on existing bridge
  • Maintain ramp for Sandy Hook Park southbound traffic traveling to Ocean Avenue (Sea Bright) southbound
  • Maintain exit ramp for Route 36 southbound bridge traffic traveling into Sandy Hook Park
   
Labor Day 2008 - May 1, 2009 - completed
Work:
  • Completion of foundations for the new southbound bridge
Traffic:
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on existing bridge
  • Close ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling to Ocean Avenue (Sea Bright) southbound
  • Close exit ramp for Route 36 southbound bridge traffic traveling into Sandy Hook Park
  • Close ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling onto the Route 36 northbound bridge

NOTE: Closed ramp traffic movements are rerouted through new temporary North intersection

   
May 1, 2009 - Labor Day 2009 - completed
Work:
  • Completion of piers and superstructure for the new southbound bridge and south pedestrian bridge
Traffic:
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on existing bridge
  • Reopen ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling onto the Route 36 northbound bridge

NOTE: North temporary intersection remains for Route 36 southbound entry into Sandy Hook Park. Southbound traffic exiting Sandy Hook Park will be detoured onto the bridge (Route 36 northbound) to Bay Avenue in Highlands and/or Scenic Drive in Atlantic Highlands, then back to Route 36 southbound bridge.

   
Labor Day 2009 - October 2009 - completed
Work:
  • Completion of foundations, piers and superstructure for the new southbound bridge and south pedestrian bridge
  • Construct South temporary intersection.
Traffic:
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on existing bridge
   
November 2009 - December 2009 - completed
Work:
  • Completion of the new ramp for Sandy Hook Park southbound traffic traveling to Ocean Avenue (Sea Bright) southbound
  • Completion of new exit ramp for Route 36 southbound bridge traffic traveling into Sandy Hook Park
Traffic:
  • Open new southbound bridge
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on new bridge
  • Open ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling into Sea Bright and traffic from Route 36 southbound traveling into Sandy Hook Park
  • Open ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling onto the Route 36 northbound bridge using new south temporary intersection
   
December 2009 - December 2010 - completed
Work:
  • Demolition of north half of existing bridge followed by construction of the new northbound bridge
  • Substantial completion is anticipated for December 16, 2010
Traffic:
  • Maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on new southbound bridge
  • Continue using South temporary intersection
  • Continue using ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling to Ocean Avenue (Sea Bright) southbound
  • Continue using ramp for Route 36 southbound bridge traffic traveling into Sandy Hook Park
   
January 2011 - May 2011 - completed
Work:
  • Final landscaping
  • Project cleanup
  • Final project acceptance work
  • Project completion is anticipated for March 31, 2011
Traffic:
  • Open two lanes of traffic in each direction on new southbound and northbound structure
  • Open ramp for Sandy Hook Park exiting traffic traveling onto Route 36 northbound
