  • Parks & Forestry – Maintaining our parks and forests for public recreation.

Municipalities

Sustainable Jersey has several actions that provide best practices to municipalities interested in supporting sustainable communities.  These actions are organized under the following categories:

  • Arts, Culture & Historic Preservation
  • Community Partnership & Outreach
  • Diversity & Equity
  • Health & Wellness
  • Sustainability Planning

Examples of NJ Companies that have social sustainability programs:

Prudential Financial Inc.  (The 2013 Healthy and Sustainable Businesses Category Winner)

In 2009, Newark-based Prudential Financial Inc. issued a corporate-wide environmental commitment to foster use of clean and renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company has implemented efforts to foster environmental stewardship, including investing more than $2.5 billion in clean energy and solar array projects; recycling more than 900 tons of material from its New Jersey operations in 2012; constructing a gold LEED-certified corporate property in Newark; sponsoring local environmental programs and events; educating employees about sustainable practices; and encouraging employees to volunteer service to local parks and communities.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals Company of J&J, Raritan Campus – With support from management, employees started a garden.  The garden will give employees experience in growing their own food, will encourage healthy eating habits and will provide a sense of camaraderie.

Ethicon, also part of the J&J family of companies, as part of its “Green Matters” initiative supported the community they were located in by achieving a River Friendly Business Certification through the Raritan River Watershed??  (need to check on this).  To achieve this certification they installed a rain garden to reduce runoff, conducted lunch and learns for employees, held employee volunteer work days and reduced water use on campus.

Becton Dickinson - "Helping all people live healthy lives" is BDs corporate purpose and the inspiration behind our global enterprise. It is a call to action that resounds with BD associates around the world. By giving our time, our talent and our resources through philanthropic and charitable efforts, we seek to improve global health standards and access to healthcare for all communities. Since the Company was founded 110 years ago, BD has actively donated cash, product and expertise to non-profit and educational organizations in North America and throughout the world.

We focus our philanthropy outreach and community relations programs in areas where BD can initiate the greatest impact supporting international immunization campaigns, promoting healthcare worker safety, raising awareness of pandemic diseases, providing disaster relief and much more.
