February 2005 Update
Soil Cleanup and Wetlands Restoration Complete
In the fall of 2004 the NJDEP completed remediation
of the final area of concern at the Burnt Fly Bog Superfund Site
located in Marlboro Township, Monmouth County. Contamination of
this area, known as the Tar Patch and Northerly Wetlands, was the
result of the overflow of oil products improperly disposed of in
adjacent lagoons back in the early 1950s and 60s.
The cleanup, which began in the spring of 2002,
consisted of the removal of more than 55,000 tons of soil contaminated
with lead and polychlorinated biphenyls. Seven acres of the wetlands
were excavated and restored with clean soil and approximately 9,500
bushes, small trees and groundcover. The wetland area is expected
to reestablish itself within 10 to 15 years.
This action, at a cost of $14 million, is the third
and final major cleanup project completed by the DEP at the Burnt
Fly Bog. The bog encompasses 1,700 acres of land, 60 acres of which
were contaminated. DEP will now conduct long-term monitoring of
the entire site including ground water and stream sampling to ensure
post cleanup work remains protective of public health and environment.
Annual cost for this work will average about $55,000, which will
be paid with state Corporate Business Tax funds dedicated for cleanups.
