Nature of work Workers are responsible for safely removing asbestos from building structures, which is conducted under strictly regulated environmental controls. To be qualified to do this work, workers must be employed by a NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) licensed asbestos abatement contractor and possess a valid NJ asbestos worker permit Supervisors are responsible for overseeing the removal of asbestos from building structures. This work is conducted under strictly regulated environmental controls. To be qualified to do this work, supervisors must be employed by a NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) licensed asbestos abatement contractor and possess a valid NJ asbestos supervisor permit.
Required Training 28-hour training course 35-hour training course
Examination Must pass a written third party state examination administered under the approval of the NJDOH. Must pass a written third party state examination administered under the approval of the NJDOH.
Application and Fee Application must be submitted to the LWD on a form provided by the LWD. Applications must include documented proof of qualifications, passing the training course, passing the third party state examination, two identical passport-sized color photos, and a certified check or money order for the application fee of $100, plus any additional information as required by the LWD. Permit duration One Year. One Year
Renewing a Permit Renewal applications must be submitted within one year of the expiration the previously issued permit. Renewal applicants must provide evidence of refresher training. Asbestos Reciprocity In order to be eligible for a NJ permit, the applicant must hold a currently valid certification in another state authorized by the EPA to administer an asbestos worker certification program.
