Stronger than Stigma: Mental Health Resources for First Responders

Stigma Council Focuses on First Responders as Part of its Mission

On February 12, 2026, the New Jersey Governor's Council on Mental Health Stigma hosted a webinar, Stronger than Stigma: Mental Health Resources for First Responders.

"Stigma is a major problem and has a harmful — and potentially devastating — impact throughout society overall. It is the most common reason why individuals do not seek mental health care. Stigma is especially problematic for first responders because they are at a heightened risk of mental illness and suicide because of frequent traumatic experiences — both directly and by observing others in crisis — that are inherent in the essential work they do," said Debra L. Wentz, PhD, Chair of the Council.

Constant exposure to dangerous and otherwise intense events can create significant mental health issues, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. In fact, it is estimated that 30% of first responders nationwide develop mental illnesses, compared to 20% of the general population, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The New Jersey Governor’s Council on Mental Health Stigma knows that beyond duty and beyond danger, risk and trauma, the stigma of mental illness is a pervasive source of stress for all persons involved with hands-on service careers, and stigma acts as a deterrent to seeking needed help.

"Every year, more of our greatest heroes are lost than can adequately be mourned. Yet every year, brave people continue to offer their hearts and risk their lives to serve others. We must never allow stigma to negatively impact their lives and certainly not allow it to end in loss of life. Stigma can only be diminished and overcome when we all help support and protect our own, especially when it comes to challenging mental illness," Dr. Wentz stated.
