Route 1 Millstone River Bridge Replacement

Environmental Stewardship

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to protecting the natural resources and environment at construction sites on New Jersey's roadways. This includes the busy Route 1 corridor where unique climate, terrain and vegetation within the open space area of central New Jersey has created a favorable physical environment for a breeding pair of Bald Eagles. Given the proximity of construction activity to the nesting tree and habitat, a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Endangered and Non-game Species Program biologist has made recommendations for ensuring the continued protection of the Bald Eagle pair.

NJDOT has implemented the NJDEP biologist's recommendations and has established an Internet link to a video camera focusing on the nesting pair of Bald Eagles in their central New Jersey habitat during the breeding season. The use of this camera does not disturb the birds but provides educational information on the eagles' sensitive habitat and a better understanding of the nature of the Bald Eagle and its life during the annual nesting season from December to July.
