Trenton, NJ—August 9, 2023—The New Jersey Fuel Cell Task Force has issued its Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Towards Clean Energy Goals report (Report), which outlines strategies to increase the use of fuel cells in New Jersey. The Report, which was produced in conjunction with Montclair State University’s Clean Energy and Sustainability Analytics Center, is intended to serve as an introduction to fuel cell technology and resources to policymakers and the public.

“New Jersey is all in on being a national leader in the clean energy transition. This Report and the Task Force’s work clearly demonstrate our comprehensive and thorough approach to meeting Governor Murphy’s goals,” said New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President Joseph L. Fiordaliso. “The Fuel Cell Task Force Report and the expertise of the Task Force, which the NJBPU is proud to chair, will help guide  the actions the State is exploring to meet energy demands of tomorrow and help New Jersey serve as a hub for the production of clean energy technologies for the entire Northeast. I want to thank the Task Force for all of their hard work over the last few years.”

This Report explores and identifies the ways in which New Jersey is well positioned to adopt fuel cell systems as a complement to responsibly developed offshore wind and solar for strategic uses in our 100% clean energy economy. Further, the Report identifies areas where action can be taken to further hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and provides recommendations for statutory, policy, and regulatory modifications, and specifically notes the competitive advantages New Jersey has due to its highly educated workforce, research and development capacity, and the profile of chemical and industrial sectors. By doing so, the Task Force aims to develop an equitable framework that includes innovation, infrastructure, safety, education and workforce development.

The Garden State, the Report concludes, is ideally positioned to serve as a regional hydrogen hub for the Northeast. In addition, some resources are already in place to expand the role fuel cells play in supplying electricity to New Jersey homes and businesses. In the near term, the Report says, businesses and institutions in New Jersey could install up to 214 megawatts of fuel cell electric generating facilities.

Governor Phil Murphy signed S762/A741 in June 2020, which created the Task Force. The legislation charged the Task Force, consisting of experts from private industry and state government, with developing a number of recommendations that could help increase the use of fuel cells in New Jersey.
