Caregivers

Patients registered in the Medicinal Cannabis Program may elect to have up to two caregivers if their condition renders them physically unable to go to an alternative treatment center (ATC). Designated caregivers may purchase medicinal cannabis from an ATC without the patient present.

Caregivers are chosen by the authorized patient – typically a friend or family member – and can be added at any time during registration, or after.  Caregivers must acquire a Medical Cannabis Program identification card through the same registration process as patients.

Caregivers who are not immediate family members are required to submit fingerprints for a criminal background investigation. The fingerprinting forms will be available after the online registration process is initiated.

Caregiver identification card fee:

The Medicinal Cannabis Program now offers free digital ID cards for new and renewing caregivers. Existing caregivers can request a digital ID card during renewal. New caregivers will be eligible to receive a free digital ID card during enrollment. New caregivers can also request a physical ID card for a $10 charge. Renewal reminders are sent 60 days before the current ID expires. Caregivers may renew at any time after that.

Note: If a patient adds a caregiver after they have received their ID, the caregiver's ID will have the same expiration date as the patient which may be within less than two years.
