New Jersey’s cannabis market surpassed $1 billion in combined medicinal and recreational cannabis sales in 2024, marking a nearly 25% increase from the previous year’s total of $800,279,300 and underscoring the robust growth of the Garden State’s regulated cannabis industry.
During its final public meeting of 2024, the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) voted to begin accepting applications for cannabis consumption area endorsements on January 2, 2025. The commissioners also set the Social Equity Excise Fee (SEEF) at $2.50 per ounce of cannabis.

During a Special Meeting of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission on Wednesday, October 30, the agency’s board voted to waive the November 1 regulatory requirement under N.J.A.C. 17:30-3.4(d) to set the 2025 Social Equity Excise Fee (SEEF) amount on the cultivation of recreational cannabis. This extension will allow the NJ-CRC board additional time to determine an appropriate SEEF rate for 2025.

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) will host a series of virtual roundtables with the hope of hearing from patients, healthcare providers, and cannabis business operators about the health and future of New Jersey’s medicinal cannabis market. The four sessions, organized by the Commission's Public Engagement and Education Committee (PEEC), Product Safety, Packaging, and Labeling Committee (PSPLC), and Permitting and Licensing Committee (P&LC), will be held on September 5, 23, and 25, and October 1, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Governor Phil Murphy today announced senior-level personnel transitions within the New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) and the Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC). Effective May 20, 2024, Jeff Brown, who currently serves as the Executive Director of CRC, will transition to DOH to serve as the Deputy Commissioner for Health Systems. He will succeed DOH Deputy Commissioner Robin Ford, who is departing on May 10, 2024 for a new role at the New Jersey Innovation Institute. Brown joins former CRC Deputy Executive Director Kelly Anderson-Thomas, who transitioned to DOH as a Deputy Commissioner for Public Health Services earlier this spring.
New Jersey’s recreational cannabis market sales for the first quarter of 2024 totaled more than $201 million — a 38% increase compared to the same period last year. Sales from January to March 2023 were generated by 24 licensed dispensaries, whereas that number increased by 96, to a total of 130 licensed dispensaries, in the same time period in 2024.

For the fourth year in a row the NJ Poison Control Center has seen an increase in calls concerning children who accidentally consumed cannabis (marijuana, THC) edibles. Last year (2021), the NJ Poison Control Center assisted in the medical treatment of more than 150 children who were accidentally exposed to cannabis edibles — nearly 100 children 5-years-old and younger; more than 55 children between the ages of 6 and 12.
