SRP Brownfields Roundtables

June 29, 2001 Meeting Minutes

DEP Building - 1st Floor, Public Hearing Room

  • Welcome and introduction by Terri Smith, Brownfield Coordinator for NJDEP.

  • Discussion of the minutes from the March 23, 2001 meeting.

  • Robert James, NJDOT and George Fallat, NJIT reviewed the Portway Project as well as the impact of port related activities on brownfield reuse projects in those port areas. In addition, the attendees at the Roundtable were invited to attend a July 20,2001 Brownfields Stakeholder Workshop Meeting. The Portway Project includes identifying brownfield properties in close proximity to the port of Newark Bay and Elizabeth to be used as freight related redevelopment projects. The NJTPA and the New Jersey Institute of Technology have completed the first phase of an innovative project to explore the opportunities for freight-related redevelopment of abandoned industrial brownfield sites. Its basis is that the dramatic growth in freight moving through the port, airport and rail terminals in northern New Jersey will present important new opportunities for cleaning up and redeveloping brownfield sites. This activity is anticipated to provide new jobs for urban residents, assist in controlling sprawl, reducing the number of trucks on regional roads and at the same time clean up the environment.

  • Discussion and feedback on the National Brownfield Conference, which is being held in Chicago, Ill., September 24 - 26, 2001. In addition, a discussion on the Phoenix Awards application process also took place. The concerns regarding the application process have been forwarded to the Phoenix Award Committee.

  • Lauri Sheppard from New Jersey Redevelopment Authority discussed the Brownfield Redevelopment Initiative and the remaining funding available for site remediation activities. The general discussion focused on the fact that $8 million of the original $15 million allocation has been granted. An additional $5 million is being allocated to the BRI from this State Fiscal Year budget.

  • Michele Pierro, Sr. Vice President from the Insurance Archeology Group discussed how to find and use old insurance policies to remediate sites.

  • Todd Poole from New Jersey Economic Development Authority discussed the Abbott decision, the 30 Abbott districts and the impact of that decision on school construction and renovation projects. This $6.8 million project may have an impact on brownfield reuse activities. Those aspects were discussed.

  • Nicole Destin of the Office of State Planning discussed the next Brownfield site marketing seminar to be held on October 5, 2001 in Jamesburg, NJ.

    Other Issues:
Elizabeth Spinnelli of the Hudson County Economic Development Corporation discussed the upcoming Hudson County Economic Summit that will be held on October 26, 2001 in Secaucus. Additional information will be forwarded as it develops.
