In 1961, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) was created with the signing of the Delaware River Basin Compact. The Compact, which is federal law and law in each basin state, granted broad basin management authorities to the Commission, including the establishment of water quality standards and regulation of discharges.

The long history of the Commission has been defined by its management, protection and improvement of the water resources of the Delaware River Basin, achieving measurable and impactful results.
