Purpose: The Charter Schools Grant Program-Planning FY17 is a federally-funded grant program designed to support newly-approved charter schools with the planning and logistics of opening of high quality charter schools in September, 2017. Through the increase in the number of seats in high quality charter schools, more students will have increased educational opportunities and will be better positioned to master the educational requirements of the Common Core State Standards as well as the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. Funds may be used in one or more of the following areas: increase the effectiveness and capacity of leadership before opening; develop the academic program; and to increase the organizational capacity of the school before opening. This limited competitive grant program is open to charter schools that received preliminary approval for a charter from the Commissioner of Education in October, 2015 or prior; who have not received federal charter school planning funds; and who are expected to open in September 2017. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has established a grant program using federal Charter School Grant Program funds. Based on the availability of federal resources, this grant program will begin September 1, 2016 and end on January 31, 2017
