About NJCCR

The New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research (NJCCR) was established on January 17, 1983, with the passage of the “Cancer Research Act” by the New Jersey State Legislature. NJCCR promotes significant and original research related to Cancer in New Jersey. The NJCCR functions as an independent body and serves as an important resource to providers and consumers of cancer services in the State.

The mission of the NJCCR is to ensure that the citizens of New Jersey receive the fullest benefit of our nation’s fight against cancer through the promotion and funding of research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer.

In pursuit of this mission, NJCCR funds cancer research focused on fostering fundamental creative discoveries, innovation, and improving health disparities in New Jersey.

NJCCR Objectives

NJCCR’s primary objectives include:

  • Review and authorize approved cancer research projects;
  • Apportion all available funds to qualifying research institutions to finance approved research projects and necessary institutional support services;
  • Ensure that funds appropriated to approved research projects are not diverted to any other use;
  • Take steps necessary to encourage the development within the State of research projects on:
    • the causes of cancer;
    • pain management and palliative care for persons diagnosed with cancer and
  • Provide the Governor and the Legislature with an Annual Report describing the state of the commission’s activities and the results of its funded research efforts.

Grant Opportunities

Each year the NJCCR receives a state appropriation to facilitate its mission of advancing cancer research in New Jersey. Additional funding for research grants comes from donations made on New Jersey State Individual Tax forms line #71 and proceeds from the specialty Conquer Cancer license plates.
