1/12/2026

We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Governor Richard J. Codey, a dedicated public servant whose life was defined by compassion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the people of New Jersey.

Governor Codey was a true leader on mental health care reform, championing this critical issue long before it was prioritized. Throughout his career, he fought tirelessly to improve services, expand access to care, and reduce the stigma faced by those living with mental illness. His efforts led to meaningful reforms and programs that have helped thousands of New Jerseyans. His impact is immeasurable.

Governor Codey’s legacy will endure in the lives he improved, the stigma he helped break, and the example he set for what it means to serve with heart and purpose.

His presence, wisdom, and dedication will be missed. We extend our condolences to his family. May they find comfort in the outpouring of appreciation from the countless lives he touched.
