The Department of Institutions and Agencies was established in 1919 and given general oversight of the state's various programs relating to psychiatric and medical care, correctional institutions, and guardianship of children.
In 1977, the Department was divided into the Department of Human Services (to administer mental health care and services for children) and the Department of Corrections (to administer state prisons and reformatories).
