Our Towns, Our Land, Our Heritage: Sustaining NJ’s Legacy
The 2007 Annual Historic Preservation Conference
May 23, 2007

2007 Historic Preservation Conference
2007 marks the fortieth anniversary for the creation of the NJ Historic Sites Council and NJ Historic Trust.  In 1967, the historic preservation movement was in its infancy and the challenge of saving history was largely in the hands of dedicated and passionate volunteers.  Today, NJ boasts one of the earliest and most successful bricks and mortar programs in the country; laws, programs and professional standards have become intertwined in our land use planning.  Hosted by Drew University, this year’s conference seeks to remember our accomplished past while charting a comprehensive course for New Jersey’s future.

Prior Conference Highlights:

18th Annual
Historic Preservation Awards

Awards Ceremony:
May 17, 2008

Beginning in 1989 preservationists have gathered together each year to kick off National Historic Preservation Month by honoring individuals, business, and organizations in New Jersey who have made important contributions to the preservation of the State's historic resources. The purpose of the Historic Preservation Awards program is to increase public awareness of historic preservation and to recognize contributions by individuals, organizations and agencies, projects of excellent quality, and volunteer contributions to preserve historic resources.

Technical Assistance and Information

The HPO maintains a diverse collection of information resources regarding many preservation topics. Most of these resources are available free of charge from the HPO and can be downloaded from this website or mailed upon request. HPO staff also routinely assist individuals and organizations undertaking a variety of preservation activities through in-house research, site visits, or general consultation. Follow the link below for more information.

New Jersey Historic Preservation Plan

Each state historic preservation office is responsible for developing a historic preservation plan, which is approved by the National Park Service in the Department of the Interior. The New Jersey Historic Preservation Plan (NJHPP) has been in place since 1996. It has served to guide many initiatives statewide such as the New Jersey State Development/ Redevelopment Plan, numerous county and municipal historic preservation plans and the activities of the HPO.

Drew University Certificate in Historic Preservation

[Certificate Program Logo]The HPO participates in the first program of its kind in New Jersey: Drew University's certificate in historic preservation. The program is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of historic preservation. The curriculum combines the theory and practice of historic preservation through a series of courses, primarily skill-based, taken for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The courses are held at Drew University and meet in the evenings for two hours a week for ten weeks and are occasionally supplemented by hands-on, weekend workshops. These courses are designed for anyone interested in learning more about historic preservation.
