 Board Also Expands Program to Include State Government Entities
Trenton, N.J. – The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) today approved grant applications from six municipalities to participate in the Clean Fleet Electric Vehicle Incentive Program, which provides financial support to local government authorities to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) at the state contract price and expand the EV charging infrastructure accessibility for their residents.

“With the grants awarded today, I’m thrilled that the state will be serving as a role model in electrifying our transportation sector and reducing our carbon emissions. By helping individual towns transition to electric vehicles, government agencies and municipalities will be doing their part in the collective, statewide effort that it will take to reach 100 percent clean energy by 2050,” said NJBPU President Joseph L. Fiordaliso.

The Board created the Clean Fleet program in December 2019, with $200,000 of funding from a U.S. Department of Energy grant plus an additional $10,000 from the state.

Each municipality is eligible for a $4,000 grant for each eligible electric vehicle purchased (maximum of two) and $1,500 toward the purchase of one dual-port Level 2 EV charging station.

Today, the Board awarded the following grants:

  • Bernards Township for $9,500;
  • Borough of Runnemede for $5,500;
  • Cedar Grove Township for $5,500,
  • Township of Millburn for $5,500;
  • Borough of Morris Plains for $1,500; and
  • Franklin Township for $1,500.

These are in addition to two Clean Fleet Electric Vehicle Incentive Program applications that the Board approved on January 22, 2020: One for Lawrence Township ($4,000); and one for Plainsboro Township ($4,000).

In addition, the Board today amended the program eligibility criteria to include state government entities in addition to local government authorities, and authorized the approval and disbursement of funds for the program through June 30 without the need for additional Board approval.

The application deadline for the program is June 30, 2021, or until all of the funding is awarded.
