How to Use Art and Nature to Build Purpose and Pride in a Correctional Setting

Posted on 12/02/2025

Bayside State Prison sits on a scenic stretch of land in South Jersey surrounded by open fields, tall trees, and a wide variety of wildlife. The setting gives the facility a distinct character and has inspired several creative and restorative projects within its grounds. Staff and incarcerated individuals have found ways to bring together art, nature, and community pride, turning everyday spaces into places of reflection and renewal.

Bayside’s physical layout and location play a steady role in the way the facility feels each day. The institution spans more than one thousand acres in southern New Jersey and sits directly on the Delaware Bay, with the bay forming the immediate western border. That proximity gives the campus an openness that is not often associated with a medium security setting. Although Bayside houses individuals across all custody levels, there is a consistent rhythm of movement as staff and custody travel through courtyards and common areas throughout each shift. One of the clearest examples of how art has reshaped these spaces is the East Arcade courtyard, a long running project shaped by incarcerated persons who added color, structure, and detail to an area that was once plain. Across the institution, about ten incarcerated artists have contributed murals and creative pieces, with a core group of about five artists providing the steadiest involvement. This work has changed the atmosphere of Bayside and brought a real sense of pride and ownership to areas that once went unnoticed.

Custody staff played an important role in the East Arcade project. Staff in that area provided steady guidance and practical instruction as incarcerated persons learned how to plan, maintain, and improve the space. The teamwork between custody and the participants set the tone for the project. The courtyard now reflects the shared effort that went into it and serves as a clear example of what can be accomplished when staff and incarcerated persons work together with patience and purpose. The area, once plain and unremarkable, now includes landscaped sections, vibrant color, and carefully arranged stonework and plantings. The project has become a point of pride for those who live and work within the facility and demonstrates how care and creativity can reshape shared environments.

Across the facility, murals and artwork created by incarcerated persons add color and texture to the environment. These pieces range from large wall paintings to smaller detailed works that highlight themes of hope, change, and connection. Each piece contributes to the overall feel of the institution and serves as a quiet reminder of the importance of expression and the capacity for personal growth.

For participants who create artwork, the process carries meaningful personal value. Art provides a structured and calming way to focus energy and emotion, something that becomes especially important in a closed environment. Completing a mural or watching a design take shape gives incarcerated persons a sense of ownership that is rare within a correctional setting. Staff members often note increased confidence, patience, and respect for shared areas among participants who take part in these creative efforts. The work becomes a reminder that individuals have the ability to build something lasting and that this effort has a real and positive effect on the place where they live.

The natural landscape surrounding Bayside strengthens that sense of transformation. The property is home to many bird species, native plants, and open green space that staff members often photograph. Together, the artwork, the natural surroundings, and the ongoing improvements throughout the grounds give Bayside State Prison a clear sense of purpose. It is a setting where creativity, responsibility, and community work together to create something meaningful and lasting.
