Making Progress: Special Investigations Division Targets Contraband

The Special Investigations Division is the Department’s internal law enforcement arm. Their responsibility is to examine sensitive incidents, review allegations of misconduct and support the safety and stability of every facility. SID’s work is deliberate and grounded in the standards that guide professional corrections. Their role is to determine facts, document findings and help the Department address concerns with confidence and clarity.
SID investigators manage a broad range of cases. Some involve staff conduct. Others focus on incidents within housing units that require an objective review to determine what occurred. Investigators conduct interviews, review available evidence and ensure that each case is documented in a consistent and credible manner. This work provides leadership with clear information to support sound decision making.
SID also plays a central role in addressing contraband. Investigators respond when prohibited items are suspected, reported or recovered. Their work helps identify how contraband entered a facility and whether additional steps are needed to reinforce security. SID analyzes patterns, gathers intelligence and works with facility leadership to limit opportunities for contraband activity. These efforts protect staff and residents and support the integrity of daily operations.
Training remains a critical part of SID’s mission. The Training and Recruitment Unit prepares investigators and supervisors for the complex assignments they manage. This includes instruction in case management, interview practice and report writing to ensure that investigations are thorough and aligned with Department policy.
SID’s work extends beyond the Department. The Division maintains active partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Through training, information sharing and collaborative case work, SID contributes to the broader public safety network and reinforces the Department’s role as a professional law enforcement partner.
