Course Description

Employment candidate interviewing is a significant function that supports organizational objectives. Ensuring that permissible interviews are conducted is critical for Human Resources professionals and the organizations they represent. Employment interviews must be grounded in sound knowledge, excellent technique, and the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Legislation. This one-day course is centered on the fundamental skills and legal parameters for selecting the right people for the right jobs.   

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate selection interviewing from other types of interviewing
  • Describe and apply a three-step model for selection interviewing
  • Define the terms:
    • Essential job function
    • Marginal job function
  • Develop appropriate questions designed to assess a candidate's strengths and weaknesses
  • Express the purpose of EEO legislation
  • Describe the four basic components of discriminatory practice identified by Title VII of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act
  • Explain "The Opportunity to Compete Act" (otherwise known as Ban the Box bill) and when you can and cannot ask about criminal history
  • Identify unlawful interview questions/inquiries based on the restrictions imposed by EEO laws
  • Describe the two stages of pre-employment established by the American's with Disabilities Act
  • Distinguish behaviors and characteristics of effective interviewers critical to projecting a positive agency image
  • Identify ways in which to improve the selection of appropriate candidate interview process, within the context of civil service constraints

Registration

Learning Management System Users:  Please login into your Learning Management System account and navigate to “Now Enrolling” from the “Browse” drop-down menu.  Select the training you wish to register for and click “Enroll.” This will initiate the required approval process.   

External participants, can click here to complete the HR-1 Training Authorization Form. Your direct supervisor, departmental training coordinator, and fiscal officer must approve the form. HR-1's received without proper approval will be returned to the Department's Training Coordinator.

Please note: You are not scheduled for the requested classroom training until you receive an official email confirmation from CLIP.
