How to Join NJ GEAR UP

There is no cost to enroll in NJ GEAR UP or access services. For more information on how to get involved, contact the program director in your city. To participate in the program, students must:

  • Complete an application
  • Attend an interview with a GEAR UP staff member accompanied by parents or guardians
  • Sign a participation contract
  • Submit a most recent report card and NJSLA scores

To be eligible, you must:

NJ GEAR UP guides middle and high school students on the path to college and provides tools for academic success. With a college education, students will gain career options, knowledge, and skills that will last a lifetime.

Current Students: Remember to turn in your latest report card to your GEAR UP staff.

  • Academic and personal counseling
  • NJSLA, PSAT, and SAT prep classes
  • A 6-week summer program on a college campus
  • Help with college applications, visits, and tours
  • Mentoring
  • After-school tutoring
  • Financial aid information workshops
  • Cultural and educational field trips
  • Assistance with applying for college grants and scholarships
  • Academic and socio-emotional support services to students during their first year of college

Access NJ GEAR UP First Year Experience Services

Services:

  • Introduction to NJ GEAR UP’s First Year Experience (FYE) programming
  • Summer Bridge - Pre-enrollment session(s)
  • Advisement on topics including but not limited to: Choosing a plan of study and a career, The fundamentals of paying for college, How to navigate your Student Center to enroll in classes
  • Referral to campus resources i.e. internships, tutoring, etc.
  • Virtual office hours by appointment
