Empty Sky, New Jersey’s memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attack on the World Trade Center, in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, was dedicated on Sept. 10, 2011 at an event attended by Governor Chris Christie, five former New Jersey governors, U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez, and family members of victims of the attacks.
Construction of the $12 million memorial was overseen by the Treasury Department’s Division of Property Management and Construction. It was designed by Frederick Schwartz Architects of New York City and built by Hall Construction of Howell, New Jersey. Its central feature is two thirty-foot high walls clad in brushed stainless steel where the names of 746 victims of the World Trade Center attacks who either lived in New Jersey or had strong ties to the state are engraved.
The memorial is open to visitors from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day and can be reached by car or light rail. Directions to Liberty State Park can be found here. |
