New Jersey Commemorates Women’s Veterans Day

The New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs held a Women’s Veterans Day ceremony at the New Jersey World War II Memorial in Trenton, New Jersey, June 12, 2023, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act.

Message from TAG

As you may know, June 12th is NJ Women Veterans Appreciation Day – a day intended to honor all of our fantastic female Veterans.

As part of the State of New Jersey’s initiative to honor New Jersey’s Women Veterans, we are pleased to share that the Department celebrated our amazing women through three separate events! On June 7th we held a State Medal Ceremony specifically honoring 12 of New Jersey’s Women Veterans at the American Legion Convention in Wildwood. On Monday, June 12th we held a Ceremony at the NJ State World War II Memorial in Trenton. And on June 17th we are excited about our Resource Fair being held at the East Orange Senior Center.

It is important to note and celebrate that this year, June 12th marked the 5th anniversary of Women Veterans Appreciation Day and it is currently recognized by 13 states including New Jersey. June 12th this year also commemorated the 75th anniversary of when President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act – allowing women to serve as regular permanent members of the military.

Most historians will remind us that women have played vital roles in America's wars and conflicts well prior to 1948. Whether carrying water to heat-exhausted troops in the middle of battle, providing first aid to the wounded, retrieving the dead, or manning firing positions to ensure a constant barrage of fire on an advancing enemy. Time and again throughout the formation and evolution of our country, women have continued to show their resiliency. Women have been made vital contributions to every facet of our society.

So one might ask, if women were allowed fully into the military in 1948, why still have this separate day? Don’t all Veterans serve? They do. But in the 75 years since 1948, the story of women’s integration into the military remains ongoing and women have had to overcome barrier after barrier to serve our country in different capacities in the military. In 1948, women were acknowledged as essential to the war efforts, yet, a quota limited women to only two percent of each branch of service.

The conflicts in Korea and Vietnam opened doors wider for women to volunteer to serve, and they soon took on new roles in the military, including engineering and air traffic control. But women couldn’t attain the ranks of general or admiral until 1967. They weren’t allowed into service academies until the 1970s, they weren’t allowed to get pregnant and stay in the military until 1975, and women weren’t allowed to serve on Navy combat ships until the 1990s.

It wasn’t until 2013 that the wheels were put in motion to “remove all unnecessary gender-based barriers to service” so that women could serve in combat roles. In the last 10 years, more roles within the military have been opened to any and all qualified applicants, regardless of gender. Women are being offered more opportunities in the military and proving they are up to the challenge. Job after job, rank after rank, women started proving themselves in different roles throughout all branches of the military. Pay benefits for the same ranks and roles are now equal regardless of gender, and both maternity leave benefits, and paternity for that matter, have expanded significantly in the last several years.

These conditions did not just happen. Women and men had to fight for these opportunities and benefits. Many did not receive the benefits for which they made their sacrifices, for which they endured additional discrimination. They worked for the benefit of future generations. How many doors did they open? At personal costs and personal risk, they stood up for what was right repeatedly. I hope more women Veterans will share their stories. Not all women Veterans… I dare say most… wear a black hat with pins and patches. If you know a woman Veteran or meet one, please take a minute to say thank you.

On the occasion of Women Veterans Day, I hope we can reaffirm our commitment to support and uplift the Women Veterans. We must continue to advocate for policies that address the unique needs of Women Veterans and create a more equitable environment within our military and Veteran communities.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of our women Veterans for your service. Thank you to your families, too, for supporting your service and our nation. Thank you for every time you stood up to make sure integrity and human dignity prevailed.

Thanks to each of you for all you do to make the Department and State a better place.

We invite you to share ideas, events and feedback. Please email our team at outreach@dmava.nj.gov.

Operation Scruffy Devil

Airman Darian Boyd | 177th Fighter Wing | May 31, 2023

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, ALASKA - In May, the 177th Civil Engineer Squadron led a Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force (BEEF) training week at Camp Mad Bull on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), including civil engineers from the 108th Wing, 111th Attack Wing, and 176th Wing from the New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Alaska Air National Guard, respectively.

Prime BEEF week sharpens an Airman's understanding of field condition scenarios such as bare base bed-down, base sustainment and emergency service support. The Scruffy Devil exercise earned its name through its nature as expeditionary training with engineers dealing with extreme weather conditions, field conditions and limited communications. The conditions for the training were selected to simulate a real-world deployment in an austere environment.

 HISTORY

history

Sergeant John Basilone on the day he received his Medal of Honor.

June 15, 1864

The Twenty-second United States Colored Infantry, a regiment composed mostly of New Jersey African-American soldiers, was part of a force that broke through the Confederate defenses of Petersburg. The Twenty-second captured an enemy fort and artillery pieces, but their army corps commander, Major General William F. “Baldy” Smith, halted the victorious advance. When Confederate reinforcements arrived, Petersburg was saved and a ten month siege of the critical rail junction began.

June 18, 1812

America declared war on Great Britain. New Jersey’s subsequent role was largely relegated to militia duty in coastal defense, although several New Jerseyans of note, including Zebulon Pike, William Bainbridge and James Lawrence, served in the army and navy, and a regular army regiment, the Fifteenth United States Infantry, was raised in the state.

June 23, 1899

Paterson-born George Henry Wanton, an African-American soldier serving in the Tenth United States Cavalry, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in saving stranded soldiers from his regiment in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

June 23, 1943

United States Marine Corps Sergeant John Basilone of Raritan, NJ was awarded the Medal of Honor in Washington. A news report noted that “firing a machine gun and also using a pistol, Basilone piled up 38 Japanese bodies in front of his emplacement on Guadalcanal, October 24, 25th 1942."

June 25, 1776

General William Howe arrived off Staten Island with a fleet and an army prepared to capture New York and subdue the rebellion there and in New Jersey.

June 25, 1947

The seven Weeks brothers—Robert, Edward, Albert, John, LeRoy, James and Joseph of Jersey City—showed up to enlist in the 309th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery of the New Jersey National Guard’s Fiftieth Armored Division. All but Joseph, an underage fifteen years old, were sworn into the organization, in the largest recorded group family military enlistment in New Jersey history.

June 25, 1950

North Korea invaded South Korea, beginning the Korean War. More than 190,000 New Jerseyans served in the U.S. military during the war between 1950 and 1953, and 836 lost their lives. New Jerseyans Nelson V. Brittin of Audubon, Hector A. Cafferata of Montville and Samuel F. Coursen of Madison were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their heroism during the conflict.

June 27, 1862

The First New Jersey Brigade, composed of the First, Second, Third and Fourth New Jersey Infantry Regiments, fought its first major engagement of the Civil War at Gaines Mill, Virginia, arriving on the field in late afternoon to reinforce hard pressed Union forces. Of the 2,300 men the brigade brought to the battle, 1,072 were killed, wounded or captured. The captured included most of the men of the Fourth New Jersey, surrounded as the units to their left and right withdrew.

June 28, 1778

The Battle of Monmouth Court House, fought west of Freehold between George Washington’s Continental Army and Sir Henry Clinton’s British army, which was withdrawing from Philadelphia to New York, ended in a tactical draw, but was an American moral victory, as the Continentals stood up to the best of the British and held the field at the end of the day.

June 28, 1861

The First, Second and Third New Jersey Infantry Regiments, the first units of the First New Jersey Brigade, left Trenton for Washington by train.

June 28, 1876

Clara Louise Maas was born in Newark to German immigrant parents. Maas graduated from the Newark German Hospital School of Nursing and became an army contract nurse during the Spanish American War. While serving in Cuba after the conflict, she volunteered to be bitten by a mosquito in the effort to find a cure for yellow fever, contracted the disease and died on August 24, 1901. Her body was returned to Newark, where she was buried with military honors in Fairmount Cemetery. In 1952, the Newark German Hospital, which had been renamed Newark Memorial Hospital and then Lutheran Memorial Hospital, was renamed Clara Maas Hospital in her memory.
