New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council

Union Township in Hunterdon County enjoys a great deal of open space for a municipality bisected by busy Interstate Highway 78. The township is home to Spruce Run Reservoir and the Clinton Wildlife Management Area surrounding it, as well as many other large tracts of preserved land accounting for 5,259 acres or 40% of the total land area. In 2022 the Highlands Council approved a petition from Union Township for conformance in the Preservation Area portion of the township (approximately 80% of the land area). In 2025 the Highlands Council approved a petition to add the township’s Planning Area land.
