New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council

The Highlands Council does not issue permits, but is statutorily required to review certain proposed projects throughout the Highlands Region for consistency with the Highlands Act and Highlands Regional Master Plan (RMP). The Highlands Council shares jurisdiction with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which is the permitting agency in the Highlands. The Highlands Council is accepting written public comments on a Public Health and Safety Waiver from the provisions of the Highlands Regional Master Plan (RMP). The waiver will permit New Jersey American Water to extend an existing water main in Washington Township, Warren County to provide safe drinking water for 142 properties with private wells contaminated with elevated levels of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Writen public comments are being accepted through Friday, June 13. At this time, it is anticipated that the Highlands Council will hold a public hearing on this review at its regular meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 19.
